The battle continues at home: In home veterans care
Today, as we reflect on the service and honor the bravery of the veterans who have served in our military, we must not forget that once these soldiers return home, many are faced with different types of battles such as life-long challenges and injuries. No one comes home from military duty unaffected. Once these soldiers fight on the front lines, they return home in need of support and various levels of care depending on their injuries. Common afflictions such as amputations, spinal injuries and hearing loss have an impact on daily activities. Some of these injuries are invisible too, affecting the psychological and emotional health of the soldier. Things like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and severe depression are reported at a staggering rate and suicide among the veteran population is increasing. More often than not, soldiers who return back home need help and in many cases, family members become the caregivers.
Caring Hearts provides home care for many veterans and their families. Partnered with Veteran’s Care Coordination, we are able to assist qualifying veterans and their spouses to apply for and obtain the Aid and Attendance Benefit. This funding provides up to $25,020 per year to cover the cost of veterans' care and medical expenses. Many of our nation’s heroes need help with activities of daily living as a result of injuries, aging, dementia, and more. The Aid and Attendance Benefit helps veterans receive the care they need—at home. It is estimated that 2 million veterans and their families are eligible for this little-known funding assistance.
The process of obtaining this benefit through the VA can seem daunting and intimidating, but Veteran’s Care Coordination helps those in need of assistance through the process of applying. Mark Thommarson, the owner of Caring Hearts of Corsicana, has personal experience with obtaining the A&A benefit:
Veteran’s Care Coordination made the process easy and understandable, and they were there to answer my questions every step of the way. The $2,000 worth of care that was previously being paid for by me and my siblings is now being paid for by the VA.
