Caregivers: Born to Serve Others

Many career choices spring from a calling to serve others: our communities, our families, patients and clients. All of these vocations enrich all of us and remind us how we all are interconnected on some level.

Caregiving is no different. While it’s often hidden from view – in the privacy of homes in most cases – it has a profound effect on us when it touches our lives or those we care about. Caregivers offer a daily example of the dignity of service to others.

The clients of Caring Hearts of Mequon, Wisconsin, along with several of the caregivers and staff there, cited long-time professional Korey Theusch as just such an example. We caught up with him to ask a few questions

Korey Theusch, Caregiving Professional, Caring Hearts of Mequon

Why did you decide to become a caregiver?

It’s a great way to improve people’s lives. Every day we’re putting the needs of others above everything else and that’s a passion. I wake up every morning with the drive to enhance my clients’ lives. I love this job.

What was your first experience in caregiving?

It was 19 years ago and I was assisting a college student. She was a quadriplegic and was self-sufficient during most of the day, but needed support with getting out of bed in the morning, bathing, morning self-care and preparing for the day. Then I would return at night to help with her bedtime routine and settling in.

Any tips for relaxing and destressing from this demanding work?

I love to do something active. I play hockey or golf depending on the season. Spending time with my family is important to me.

What’s the best part of the role?

I love to caregive. I feel like I was born to serve others and having the opportunity to do that as part of the nationally recognized leader in home care is a real privilege.
